Recent EU-US discussions regarding the increasing purchase of American weapon systems have raised fundamental questions about Europe’s future. Although the transatlantic alliance remains a cornerstone of our collective security, an overreliance on non-European suppliers for strategic capabilities poses challenges to the EU’s autonomy, the resilience of its industrial base and, ultimately, its capacity to safeguard its own security.
Yet Europe is not without alternatives. Over the years, EU programmes have fostered the development of advanced and reliable defence technologies, thereby demonstrating Europe’s capacity for self-strengthening when it acts with determination.
The EU cannot afford to jeopardise its sovereignty. In an era of geopolitical uncertainty, sovereignty is not just a slogan; it is the very foundation of our freedom, security and democratic values. An overdependence on external suppliers for critical defence capabilities endangers the European Union’s resilience and credibility as a global actor.
At C&V Defence, we believe that strengthening the EDTIB is not just an economic or technical necessity, but a moral and strategic imperative. It is about ensuring that the European Union retains the freedom to act, the capacity to protect its citizens, and the credibility to have a say at international negotiating tables in the future.
This is why, always guided by the bonds we share with our historic allies, we will continue to advocate for a European Union that is not only secure but also capable of shaping its own destiny and upholding the principles on which it is built.
